Juroon - Assamese pre-wedding Ceremony Event: My Juroon ceremony, held on 2nd Oct, 2008 - a day before my marriage with Nilotpal (Don). What is it: "Juroon" is a pre-wedding ceremony in Assamese marriages where the groom's family comes over to the brides' to gift her with jewellery and the bridal trousseau. Seated before the 'morol' or mandap, in front of a mirror, the mother-in-law first applies the sindoor/vermillion on the bride and slips in the wedding ring and decks her with everything from her bridal make-up down to her sandals. In exchange, the bride's family presents the groom's raiment and accessories. The groom is not allowed to attend this ceremony. This ceremony is followed by "Nuoni" or "Haldi-chandan" where realtives apply haldi/turmeric and moong paste and dahi (yogurt) on the bride and groom at their respectives homes and bathe them with water (women get a pail of water from a source of running/non-stagnant water). Significance: In ancient times, when there was no make-up, this ceremony acted as a beauty enhancer.
postjuroon.mp4 Priyanka's juroon ceremony was held on 3 February 2010 at her residence in Tinsukia, Assam - the day before we got married. People from our (mine & Priyanka's) extended families meet each other for the first time during the ceremony. This footage was shot after the juroon and the bride is relaxed and seeks blessings from her in-laws for her new journey.

Gay marriage backers: NY vote has national impact
NEW YORK — Many obstacles still lie ahead for supporters of same-sex marriage, and eventually they will need Congress or the Supreme Court to embrace their goal. For the moment, though, they are jubilantly channeling the lyrics of “New York, New York.”
Editorial: Broun test on gay marriage ban falls apart
Given the numbers, it's clear Congressman Paul Broun's new bid to pursue a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage is nothing more than a political ploy aimed at his conservative base.
Forum: Widespread acceptance of gay marriage just a matter of time
There is no denying that the decision of the California Supreme Court to uphold Proposition 8 is a setback for gay families and anyone who supports marriage equality. But the reversal is temporary.
